Flush from the booming economy, newspapers plan to spend nearly $800 million on equipment this year.
That's a 44% jump from the amount newspapers said they spent last year, according to the Newspaper
Association of America's annual survey of capital spending, which was based on the responses of 186
newspapers this year.



The biggest spending increase will be in plant construction, where the responding newspapers said
they planned to spent about $249 million, more than 100% of what they spent last year.



Other big spending areas will be presses, where newspapers will spend an estimated $143.2 million, a
71% gain, and computer software, where spending will jump more than 39% to $102 million, according
to the survey.
