By: E&P Staff Janet S. Weaver, who joined The Tampa Tribune as managing editor in July, was named executive editor and vice president Friday.
She succeeds Frank Denton, who resigned last month to pursue other opportunities.
Before she joined the Tribune, Weaver was with The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., where she served as dean of faculty. Before that, Weaver spent seven years as managing editor and executive editor at the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune.
Weaver began her career at newspapers in Texas and Florida. She was a reporter at and assistant city editor of the Stuart (Fla.) News from 1986 to 1989, and then served as a reporter and later deputy managing editor between 1989 and 1994 at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. She was managing editor of The Wichita (Kan.) Eagle from 1994 to 1997.
Tribune Publisher and President Gil Thelen praised Weaver for her savvy news judgment and relationship with the newsroom staff.
