By: E&P Staff The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has published the 9th edition of "How to Use the Federal FOI Act."
The latest handbook explains new ways that the federal government processes Freedom of Information Act requests, as a result of new court rulings, new legislation and changes in administrative policy. It also covers refusals to honor requests because of privacy concerns.
Executive Director Lucy A. Dalglish said the new handbook "will especially help requesters navigate changes in classification policy and new uses of national security as a reason for invoking exemptions to the federal FOI Act."
The handbook may be used
for free online or purchased in print form for $5 at the
Reporters Committee Web site.
The Web site includes a newly updated FOI letter request generator to help media organizations draft their requests.
Funding for this edition was provided by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation of the Society of Professional Journalists, Newsday, the Scripps Howard Foundation and the St. Petersburg Times Fund.
