New Graduate J-school for NYC

Posted
By: E&P Staff The nation's newest graduate school of journalism will arrive in 2005 at The City University of New York (CUNY), the school revealed this week. CUNY plans a one-year program with a yearly tuition far below that charged at private universities.

It will stress nuts-and-bolts journalism training and urban reporting, as opposed to newly fashionable broader approaches, such as Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, which now includes work in political theory and statistics.

William P. Kelly, provost of CUNY's Graduate Center and chairman of the search committee for a dean, told The New York Times that already 40 to 50 candidates have applied.

The program will kick off with a writing and reporting "boot camp" in August 2005. According to the Times, CUNY plans to take 50 students in 2005, aiming to expand to 200. It will probably be based in midtown Manhattan.
