The Citizens' Campaign today unveiled the PatersonPress.com, a full-fledged, real-time hyperlocal news site covering Paterson government, politics, sports, arts, community non-profits, entertainment and much more.

Heading the Paterson Press is Joe Malinconico, a Bayonne-born "Jersey Guy" whose 20-year journalism career took him from being a copy boy at the New York Times to one of the State's top investigative reporters at the Star-Ledger. During his 13-year tenure at the Star-Ledger, Joe's stories were credited with providing insight that led to reforms in transportation policy and the E-ZPass system. Joe won the 1999 Dee Murphy Award and the NJPA's Robert P. Kelly Award in 2007.

"The Paterson Press will provide robust coverage of the Mayor, City Council, and School Board. It will also provide civic education content. This is not a blog, but a resource for residents to stay informed and engaged throughout Paterson," said PatersonPress.com Editor Joe Malinconico.

In addition to real-time news coverage, the strictly non-partisan Paterson Press will offer information about community non-profits, business listings, and a community calendar of events. It will not publish editorials, as its focus will be hard news.

The Paterson Press is the first hyperlocal news site dedicated to reporting on Paterson civic affairs, government, educational system, and politics. In addition to having a New Jersey Press Association credentialed editor, the Paterson Press will be hiring professional freelance journalists, with priority for Paterson residents.

The Paterson Press will be operated by the Center for Civic Responsibility and its Citizens' Campaign and will utilize the platform developed by TheAlternativePress.com, New Jersey's most successful objective, all-online, daily hyperlocal newspaper founded by New Jersey native Michael Shapiro.

"The Paterson Press will give residents the knowledge they need to stay informed on current events in the City and will educate citizens on how to develop and advance constructive government solutions," said Harry Pozycki, Chairman of the Center for Civic Responsibility.

"TheAlternativePress.com is excited to be working with the Citizens' Campaign to bring objective hyperlocal news to the residents of Paterson," said Michael Shapiro, CEO of TheAlternativePress.com.

Background
The Center for Civic Responsibility is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-partisan organization. Through its grassroots membership, the Citizens' Campaign, it is leading the Jersey Call to Service, a public service initiative to inspire and teach citizens to participate in the leadership of their communities and build a culture of service.

Last fall, with advice and guidance from Center board member and University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School of Communication Dean Michael Delli Carpini, the Center began offering a free Citizen Journalism course on http://www.jointhecampaign.com/to encourage and facilitate more robust local government reporting.
