The book -- commissioned by the Center for Public Integrity (CPI), which sponsors investigative journalism -- looks at what went wrong in New Orleans and what must be done to prevent a future catastrophe.
It includes material by John McQuaid, whose Times-Picayune of New Orleans reporting predicted the levee failure three years before it happened; Katy Reckdahl of The Times-Picayune; and Gulf Coast resident Curtis Wilkie of The Boston Globe.
Other contributors are Jenni Bergal, a CPI project manager who was a longtime reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale; Jim Morris, a CPI project manager who was at the Houston Chronicle and other papers; Sara Shipley Hiles, a freelance journalist who worked for The Times-Picayune and other papers; and Frank Koughan, a freelance journalist with TV and magazine credits.
The book's foreword is by Dan Rather, the former CBS News anchor who writes a column for King Features Syndicate.
