New Knight Foundation Awards for Community News Projects

Posted
By: E&P Staff The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has launched its 21st Century News Challenge, an open competition for funding of community news projects that best use innovative digital projects to connect citizens with their communities.

Media advisors for the competition will award as much as $5 million in the first year to projects that show a combination of vision, courage and know-how in connecting people to the physical space where they work and live. The foundation might spend as much as $25 million over the next five years on news experiments, if warranted by the entries.

The types of projects that can be submitted are wide ranging from cell phone documentaries to journalism games. Other acceptable areas are prototypes, leadership initiatives, and products.

?We hesitate to set too many rules, because we expect the best entries will be ideas that totally surprise us,? Knight journalism program officer Gary Kebbel said in a statement. The competition will be open to anyone, not just those in journalism.

Applications for The Challenge are available online here and will be accepted through Dec. 31. The foundation expects to announce winners in the spring of 2007.
