By: E&P Staff Stephen Buckley has been named managing editor of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times.
Buckley, 37, will direct the Times' news operations in St. Petersburg and oversee the daily news report. He is the first journalist of color to assume this position.
Buckley worked as an intern in the Detroit bureau of the Wall Street Journal and also as an editorial writer for the Philadelphia Daily News while attending Duke University. He later went to work for The Washington Post and spent the first five years of his career covering local news, first as a night cops reporter and then covering education.
His work at the Post earned him two overseas assignments, first as Africa bureau chief based in Nairobi, Kenya, then as Brazil bureau chief in Rio de Janeiro. In 2001, Buckley joined the Times as national correspondent.
