By: E&P Staff Metromix, the online entertainment brand owned jointly by Tribune Co. and Gannett Co., has launched a new version of the Metromix iPhone application that allows users to find nearby entertainment options based on their GPS position.

"What's Nearby" is a free app that can be used to locate restaurants, bars, events, movie theaters and showtimes, and other venues that are within walking distance or a short drive.

Metromix said the application has been downloaded more than 100,000 times in its first days of operation in 37 U.S. markets.

Among the third-party partnerships providing services are restaurant reservations by OpenTable; takeout food ordering by GrubHub; movie ticket purchasing through Fandango; and maps by Google.

Metromix CEO Kara Walsh said the app includes "authoritative editorial reviews and extensive details and photos that we collect about venues, which complement the reviews from our user base."
