New Nielsen Ratings: Hillary Still #1 As Dem Draw

By: E&P Staff Nielsen released its new viewership numbers for the Democratic convention this week, noting that "Bill Clinton and Senator Joe Biden drew more viewers (24 million) than Michelle Obama (22.3 million) ? but fewer than Hillary Clinton (26 million)."

It also notes, "Older viewers (age 55+) continued to dominate the TV audience Wednesday night, with 18.1% of all Americans in that age group ? 12.5 million people ? tuning in to the convention coverage." This compares with a 6.2 rating for those 18 to 49.

The rating for all household Wednesday night was 16.4, compared with 17.8 for Tuesday and 15.1 for Monday.

The rating from blacks was 12.2 for Wednesday vs. 8.4 for whites.

Nielsen comments, "In comparison to day three of the 2004 convention, which drew almost 18 million viewers, the audience for day three of the 2008 convention was still significantly larger (up by a third to 24 million viewers)."
