New Online National Network for Newspapers in Early Stages of Development

By: E&P Staff Some big newspapers companies are in talks to form an online national network that could directly compete with Yahoo.

According to the Chicago Tribune's Michael Oneal, executives at Gannett, Tribune, Hearst, MediaNews Group and Cox Newspapers are working to strike up a "one-stop shopping" destination for national online advertisers.

The group plans to welcome other newspaper companies into the fold. "The more the better," Leon Levitt, vice president of digital media at Cox and one of the architects involved in the Yahoo partnership, told the Chicago Tribune.

Levitt stressed the network is still in its early stages. He also said that he is happy with the Yahoo partnership but that newspapers have to look out for their own interests.
