New Plant, manroland Press for News Ltd.

By: E&P Staff News Ltd. Chairman and Chief Executive John Hartigan announced last week that a $52 million (Australian) printing plant will be built on the company's existing print site in Townsville.

Its press hall will be equipped with a manroland press to be commissioned in 2010. A spokesman for the German press manufacturer said details of the press would not be immediately disclosed.

Hartigan said the new press not only will make the Townsville Bulletin "an even more compelling proposition for both readers and advertisers," but will also greatly improve the quality of The Australian, Weekend Australian, The Courier Mail and Sunday Mail, which are printed in Townsville.

To be "the largest in Queensland," the new press, said News Corp., "will be capable of printing 160 pages of back-to-back four-color" and producing two products simultaneously. It will be equipped with a trimmer, stitcher and gluer.
