By: E&P Staff McClatchy appointed George McCanless as president and publisher of The Telegraph in Macon, Ga. He was previously senior vice president for finance and strategic planning at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.
McCanless, 51, replaces Pamela "P.J." Browning, who was named president and publisher of The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
"George is a seasoned executive with a distinguished record of success at four different newspapers in the East and Southeast," Gary Pruitt, chairman and CEO of McClatchy, said in a statement.
McCanless served in the News & Observer's top financial position since 2000. Prior to that, he was director of administration for The Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y. He also worked as the CFO of The New Haven (Conn.) Register. He began his newspaper career at The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C.
"It is an honor to be joining such a talented staff at a newspaper with a long tradition of journalistic excellence and community service," McCanless said in a statement. "I am eager to become part of the ongoing effort to expand our audience both in print and online."
