By: E&P Staff Bill Church, who has been the top editor at the Star-Gazette in Elmira, N.Y., has been named executive editor of the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore., effective June 19.

Church, 48, has overseen the Star-Gazette since October 2001. Both papers are owned by Gannett Co. Inc.

Under Church's leadership, the Star-Gazette was named the Newspaper of Distinction in 2003 by the New York State Associated Press Association and was a finalist in 2004 for the Associated Press Managing Editors Online Convergence Award, the Salem paper reported.

"Bill has been a leader in community newspapers and in using new media to serve readers' needs," Statesman Journal Publisher Sorensen Craig said in a statement. "I know Statesman Journal readers will benefit from his experience and leadership of our excellent news staff."

Church told his new paper that he is proud the Star-Gazette has "remained relevant for readers at a time when they've been bombarded by media choices."

Church replaces David Risser, who left the Statesman Journal in December to take an editing position in London, the paper reported.
