New 'Sun' Site Rises in Baltimore

By: The (Baltimore) Sun launched its redesigned Web site Tuesday evening, offering a streamlined, more modern look and a new feature to allow readers to post videos.

It is the site's first comprehensive update since 2005, when it was renamed baltimoresun.com, company officials said. The newspaper's original site, SunSpot.net, was launched in 1996.

Viewers will see a brighter, less cluttered look, spokeswoman Anne C. Burger said. Each section front will feature a video to complement the text, photos will be larger, and more photos will be posted, she said.

Burger said visitors also will be able to upload videos - which could be "anything from breaking news, a child's lacrosse game, to their cat playing with yarn."

"Online users want video," said Tim Windsor, general manager for interactive for The Baltimore Sun Co., said in a statement. "And baltimoresun.com offers a great combination of professional video created by The Sun's photojournalists as well as video submitted by our readers."

The Sun is one of 11 daily newspapers owned by The Tribune Co.

The Sun's Web site has averaged 2.3 million unique users so far in 2007, making it 19th among major newspaper sites, according to a recent survey by Nielsen/NetRatings.
