By: E&P Staff GMA is introducing an insert-loading system that automatically builds, retrieves and loads log of inserts, combining the three functions to save on labor while providing sound ergonomics and practical safety features.
After compressing inserts and strapping the resulting logs, a vacuum lift system helps transfer each log to an enhanced stream feeder, which processes the inserts and loads them into the feeder.
GMA plans to demonstrate the log system at Nexpo, where it said it also will show its Print-on-Demand, a high-speed inkjet printing system that uses Hewlett-Packard technology to print and insert single-sheet product at up to 25,000 copies per hour. Print-on-Demand can produce four-color single sheets, and can print customized segments on preprints for specialized distribution zones.
A potential source of new revenue for newspapers, the system offers advertisers an option for last-minute or additional communication with readers and opportunities for desire localized coverage for small merchants.
