By: A top Gannett Co. editor has been named executive editor at the Middletown (N.Y.) Times Herald-Record, a Dow Jones & Co. newspaper covering suburbs north of New York City.
Derek Osenenko, editor of the Gannett News Service since September, will replace Mike Levine, who died in January, Record president and publisher Joe Vanderhoof announced Monday.
Gannett said Osenenko resigned effective Aug. 25 and his responsibilities at GNS will be covered by managing editors Laura Rehrmann, Jeanette Barrett-Stokes and Craig Schwed until he is replaced.
Before joining GNS, Osenenko was executive editor at the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J., and had been executive editor at Florida Today in Melbourne, Fla., and the Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) Journal. He joined Gannett in 1989 as managing editor in Poughkeepsie.
Osenenko, 52, whose wife is a banker in upstate New York, said the new job will allow him to spend more time at their home in Woodstock.
"He is very community-minded," Vanderhoof said of Osenenko. "It's all about local news. We're a community newspaper and that's where our responsibility lies."
Osenenko will supervise a staff of 100 at the newspaper, part of Dow Jones' Ottaway subsidiary. Rupert Murdoch has said his News Corp. will likely sell off the Ottaway group once it closes a deal to buy Dow Jones. Gannett, with a heavy presence in the New York suburbs, is among the companies mentioned as a potential suitor.
