USA Today is tapping into the location-based mobile market with new offerings and incentives on Gowalla, a mobile and Web service that gives people a new way to express themselves through everyday places and extraordinary settings they enjoy.
"USA Today has always been a traveler's companion. We can't think of a better way to reach our core audience than to offer our valuable content while they are in the process of traveling," USA Today Travel General Manager Victoria Borton said in a statement.
Through Gowalla's location-based social network, USA Today aims to make airport travel easier to manage and more fun by presenting Gowalla users with one of three USA Today Travel features when they check in at any of the nation's busiest airports.
-- "Today in the Sky," usatoday.com's air travel community, is moderated by Ben Mutzabaugh, with the latest in airline, airport and air travel news.
-- Available for more than 40 of the busiest airports in the country, "USA Today Airport Guides" let travelers know the cheapest place to park, quickest way to get through security, best options for dining and shopping, real-time flight information and more.
-- Relying on USA Today Travel's reporters and editors, USA Today Trips recommends eight to 10 places to visit in 10 U.S. cities.
According to usatoday.com, travelers who check in at the "most unique" airports through Labor Day may be invited to be highlighted in "Today in the Sky."
