'New York Times' and IRE Team Up For Ethnic Media Watchdog Workshop

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The New York Times and Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) will conduct a two-day workshop on investigative and enterprise reporting for reporters and editors from news organizations that cover ethnic communities in the New York City area, a Times release announced.

The release stated that college students studying journalism also are invited to participate. The workshop will be held at The New York Times Building on April 17-18.

"The workshop will include sessions on covering law enforcement; investigating the impact of the economic recession in your community; how to use the Internet for enterprise stories; how to investigate immigration issues; and how to obtain background information on people and businesses," the release said. "Sessions will examine how to take advantage of open records laws and to investigate injustices in your communities."

The workshop is funded by The New York Times Company Foundation as one of its annual institutes for journalists and is being held in collaboration with the New York Community Media Alliance and New America Media.

Sessions will be led by investigative reporters and trainers, and there will be opportunities for informal discussions and story brainstorming.

Hands-on training in computer-assisted reporting, focusing on the use of spreadsheets to enhance reporting, will be offered to a limited number of participants, the release added.

The registration fee is $25 for working journalists and $10 for students. The fee also includes a one-year IRE membership.
