NEW YORK TIMES CO. CUTS REGIONAL JOBS

Posted
By: TAMPA, Fla. ? (AP) The New York Times Co. is laying off about 100 employees at its regional newspaper group in response to slowing advertising and an uncertain economic outlook.

The layoffs, which were announced to staff members on Monday, were part of a broad cost-cutting program that the company announced in April. The company has already laid off more than 100 staffers at its online unit, and it is also offering buyouts to other employees.

The cuts at The New York Times' regional newspape r group represent about 3% of the work force of 3,500 at the unit, which is based in Tampa and includes 14 newspapers in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana and California.

Employees were offered severance packages of two weeks p a y for every year of employment, with a maximum of 26 weeks pay.

Otis McCollum, the group's vice president for human resources, blamed the layoffs on the rising cost of newsprint and a drop-off in advertising revenue.

He said he did not believe any fur th er cuts would be necessary this year "unless the bottom falls out completely." McCollum did not have information on how many of the 100 jobs involved newsroom positions.
