'New York Times' Names New Culture Editor

By: E&P Staff The New York Times has named Sam Sifton its new culture editor.

Sifton, 38, is promoted from deputy culture editor. In his new capacity, he will oversee a staff of nearly 100 editors, critics, and reporters.

Before his appointment to deputy culture editor, Sifton was deputy dining editor and dining editor. Before that, he was a founding editor of Talk magazine. He served as managing editor, media critic, senior editor, and restaurant critic at The New York Press from 1990 to 1998.

Jim Schachter remains deputy culture editor.

Sifton succeeds Jonathan Landman, who is returning to his full-time post as assistant managing editor.
