By: Two weeks after New York Daily News Editor in Chief Michael Cooke resigned from the paper after less than a year on the job, Editorial Director Martin Dunn has announced that he will take over Cooke's old job.
In a memo to staff
leaked to gawker.com, Dunn said he would keep his old post along with the new responsibilities. "I am delighted to once again be asked to lead a wonderful team of journalists on a day-to-day basis," the memo read, in part. "The recent series and campaigns that the Daily News has been running show the power of the newspaper and how important it is to the city."
Dunn's announcement comes just weeks after Cooke revealed plans to leave the paper in January and take a corporate editorial post with Hollinger International, owners of the Chicago Sun-Times and several other nearby publications. Cooke had served as Sun-Times editor from 2000 to 2005.
Dunn's memo also announced that the Daily News had re-hired Orla Healy, currently with the New York Post, to become managing editor/features. She starts in January.
