New Zogby Poll: Few Republicans Choose Newspapers as a Trustworthy Source

By: E&P Staff A new poll from Zogby Interactive tries to discern why more people get their news and trust the Internet more than traditional media sources like newspapers.

The study, conducted in the past month, found that 37% of respondents said they found the Internet more reliable as a news source versus newspapers, which came in at 16%.

"People seem to be infatuated with the Internet, perhaps because of the instant gratification it provides for most anything we need to know," wrote John Zogby, the president and CEO of Zogby International, in a column for Forbes.

Sixty-three percent of respondents said that newspapers are struggling because of changes brought about by the Internet while 37% faulted newspapers.

The survey also found that trust of media depended on one's political leanings. For example, only 6% of respondents who identify as Republicans choose newspapers as the most trust-worthy source, while 25% of Democrats said newspapers were the most reliable.

"Now with newspapers on the brink, the antipathy of conservatives toward the press in general and newspapers specifically takes on a real economic impact," Zogby wrote.
