By: E&P Staff The Republican in Springfield, Mass., announced Monday a workforce reduction at the Newhouse paper.
Publisher Larry McDermott said 44 part-time employees were being laid off, explaining that the paper can no longer avoid steps already taken by most daily newspapers in the U.S.
"We all are well aware of the economic decline of our region," he said, according to an article in the paper today. "In addition, we face industry challenges and pressures that include rapidly changing market conditions and rising operating costs. While many daily newspapers responded by laying off employees over the last several years, we have resisted that until now."
