News Corp. Seeking Online News Consortium -- Meets With Heavies?

By: Joe Strupp News Corp. executives reportedly have been meeting in recent weeks with newspaper publishers about forming a consortium that would charge for news online and on wireless devices, the Los Angeles Times reports today.

The Times' story states that News Corp. Chief Digital Officer Jonathan Miller has made the company "a logical leader in the effort to start collecting fees from online readers because of its success with the Wall Street Journal Online, which boasts more than 1 million paying subscribers."

It adds that Miller "is believed to have met" with publishers from The New York Times Co., Washington Post Co., Hearst Corp. and Tribune Co.
