'News Tribune' of Jefferson City, Mo., Seeing Payoff from Uniset

By: E&P Staff Just a few months after its commissioning, the MAN Roland Uniset 75 at the Jefferson City, Mo., News Tribune is helping generate revenue.

Centerpiece of a new $14 million plant, the singlewide Uniset 75 features four reelstands, 32 couples and a 2:3:3 MAN Roland folder -- a configuration that attracts more commercial printing for the News Tribune Co. General Manager Mike Vivion would not identify new clients but said added color capabilities, better print quality and production efficiencies enable more aggressively pursuit of commercial business.

"We've landed a big weekly from Iowa along with some other excellent publication work and insert jobs as well," Vivion said in a statement. "The objective is to triple our outside printing by next year, and I'm pretty sure we will make that goal." That "the press comes up to color very quickly and generates very little waste," Vivion added, "is a big plus on the smaller jobs."

Pecom controls and automation contributes to the press' makeready efficiency. Easier to learn and operate, the new press has been run by one pressman, according to Vivion.

Printing News Tribune Co papers remains the first priority. The firm serves the capital city with The News Tribune (19,257 morning and evening circulations, 23,581 Sunday). It also prints the five-day Fulton Sun and weekly California Democrat, extending its coverage of central Missouri.

The paper was completely redesigned to best use the greater color capacity and higher print quality. Among advertisers, said Vivion, the Uniset's "ability to provide more color ads went over really well. We've more than doubled the number of color ads we produce."
