NewsCom and PressLink will merge during the first quarter of next year, it was announced today.

Los Angeles-based NewsCom is Tribune Media Services' (TMS) online content delivery agency, which serves a heavily international clientele. Philadelphia-based PressLink is Knight Ridder's online photo delivery agency, with a largely domestic customer base. Combined, they distribute content from more than 50 providers to 8,000-plus media customers worldwide.

"Our primary customer bases are quite different, and thus very complementary," said Joseph DiMarino, president of MediaStream, the Knight Ridder company that handles PressLink.

The new joint venture, whose name has yet to be determined, will be headquartered at NewsCom's offices. Some layoffs are possible.

NewsCom became a TMS unit after Tribune Co. bought Times Mirror earlier this year.
