Newsday Announces Buyouts, No Need for More Cuts

Posted
By: Jennifer Saba Newsday Publisher Timothy Knight issued a memo to staff today explaining that enough employees have accepted buyouts ensuring that jobs are safe for now. ?I am happy to report that no additional layoffs will be necessary to meet our staff reductions,? Knight wrote.

Executives in operations had found open positions for some affected employees and enough staffers took the buyout packages in the editorial and transportation departments ?so that layoffs are unnecessary.?

In mid November, Knight announced that up to 100 jobs would have to be eliminated at the paper through voluntary and involuntary buyouts due to cost cutting pressures and the circulation scandal.

Newsday Spokesman Stu Vincent said that early in the process there were a few involuntary buyouts.
