By: E&P Staff Forty-six employees will be leaving Newsday of Melville, N.Y., it was announced today, with 40 taking voluntary buyouts as part of the Tribune Co.'s mandated cost-cutting program.

The buyouts came in the newsroom and production areas, with the layoffs in other departments. Newsday previously cut 26 jobs in January.

Tribune has ordered spending cuts at its 14 newspapers, with the Los Angeles Times and its nearby affiliates planning shrinkage by about 190 positions.

"While situations like this are difficult," said Publisher Raymond Jansen in a memo, "it is important for us to continue our hard work, staying focused on growing revenue and closely managing our expenses."
