By: (AP) Rich Galant, deputy managing editor of
Newsday in Melville, N.Y., has been appointed managing editor/news and columnist Les Payne has been named New York editor, the newspaper announced Friday.
Newsday Editor Howard Schneider also named Phyllis Singer as the paper's first assistant managing editor for content development; Alex Martin as the new assistant managing editor for features; and Debby Krenek as the first cross-media editor.
Galant, Payne and Krenek will assume their new positions immediately, while Singer and Martin will take on their new duties Dec. 1.
Galant, who joined the paper in 1970 and has held a number of managerial positions, will oversee all assigning desks in his new position except for the metro desk in the city.
Payne, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, will be responsible for the daily operations in the city and the overall development of the city edition. He will continue as a columnist for Tribune Media Services, a subsidiary of Tribune Co., which owns
Newsday. Based on Long Island,
Newsday's readership extends into New York City, especially the borough of Queens.
Singer, who has directed the paper's feature, entertainment and lifestyle reports, will be responsible for television and radio initiatives, as well as new projects and partnerships.
Martin, who served as assistant managing editor for Long Island for the past three years, will direct the "Part II" and entertainment staffs and be responsible for the
Sunday Long Island Life weekly magazine.
Krenek, who joined the paper in 2001, will oversee the art and photo departments, the graphics operations and the Long Island and New York City Internet sites.
