Newsday Names New Editor for New York City Edition

By: Joe Strupp Diane Davis has been named metropolitan editor of Newsday, overseeing the daily operation of the New York City edition, the Melville, N.Y., paper announced Friday.

Davis, 36, who was deputy metro editor, will report to New York Editor Les Payne.

"Diane's work on the city desk has been marked by creativity, excellent news judgement and her considerable leadership skills," Editor John Mancini, who had previously overseen the New York edition as Assistant Managing Editor/New York, said in a statement. "She has a real feel for New York City."

Mancini cited Davis's leadership of the city staff's reporting on the Sept. 11 attacks, the crash of Flight 587, and a City Hall shooting. He also noted Davis' ability to plan and execute coverage of large-scale city events, such as the recent GOP convention.

Davis joined Newsday in 1997 as a copy editor after serving as metro editor at the Star-Gazette in Elmira, N.Y., where she started as a feature writer. She has been an assistant city editor, deputy metro editor, and day city editor for the New York desk. She started her newspaper career at the Intelligencer Journal in Lancaster, Pa., and is a graduate of Penn State University, where she was editor of The Daily Collegian student newspaper.

Davis and her husband, Jack Otter, a former editor at Newsday, live in Brooklyn.
