'Newsday' Names Rita Ciolli Editorial Pages Editor

By: Joe Strupp Rita Ciolli, a Newsday editorial board member whose time at the paper dates back 35 years to a summer internship, has been named editor of the editorial pages, the paper announced today. Publisher Tim Knight revealed that Ciolli will replace Jim Klurfeld, effective November 1, 2007.

?Rita knows our community well; she?s lived here, raised her family here and she has covered it as a journalist," Knight said in a statement. "We have a vision for engaging a diverse range of Long Island voices and personalities in our editorials, op-ed pages, columns and letters in print and online. The breadth of Rita?s experience and her deep roots on Long Island make her ideally suited for this important role.?

Ciolli began her Newsday career in 1972 as an intern and has spent her entire career at the Melville, N.Y., paper. Starting as a local reporter covering Hempstead, N.Y., she also worked in the Washington, D.C., bureau covering the Supreme Court and in the paper's "Part Two" section covering new media and technology. She joined the Opinion staff in 2005 as a writer and member of the editorial board.
