By: E&P Staff Does Newsday have just 35 online-only subscribers to its Newsday.com, which was put behind a pay wall last fall? The newspaper isn't exactly confirming that, but says it never expected to raise revenue through online subscriptions.
John Koblin of the New York Observer reported that Newsday Publisher Terry Jimenez, when asked by a reporter asked how many people had signed up for online-only access at its $5 a week rate, conferred with another staffer and confirmed the number was just 35.
All subscribers to Newsday and Cablevision Optimum Online get full access to the Web site, Newsday notes.
"Millions of Cablevision customers in the New York tri-state area and 75 percent of Long Island households, including all Newsday home delivery subscribers, now have exclusive access to newsday.com at no additional charge," Newsday said in a statement first reported by Stacy D. Kramer at PaidContent.org. "Internal research shows that Newsday's web site is an extremely popular new benefit to hundreds of thousands of Long Island Cablevision households. Given the number of households in our market that have access to Newsday's web site as a result of other subscriptions, it is no surprise that a relatively modest number have chosen the pay option."
Newsday also says its traffic has increased each month since November, soon after the pay wall was erected.
