By: Cablevision Systems says its loss widened during the fourth quarter due to a hefty write-down on the value of its Newsday newspaper.
The cable TV operator says it lost $321.4 million, or $1.11 per share, compared with a profit of $6.6 million, or 2 cents per share, in the fourth quarter of 2007. The latest quarter included an impairment charge of $402.4 million related to Newsday.
Cablevision's revenue climbed 11 percent to $2.05 billion from $1.84 billion.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected a profit of 33 cents per share on revenue of $2.06 billion. Analyst estimates typically exclude one-time items.
Bethpage, N.Y.-based Cablevision Systems Corp. bought Long Island-based Newsday for $650 million last summer.
