By: E&P Staff On Monday Oct. 17, the Newseum, Michigan State University School of Journalism, the National Press Club, the Poynter Institute, and the Smithsonian Institution will present a full-day symposium titled "Examining Opinion and Bias in the News."
The program -- which includes three panels with representatives from major print and electronic media organizations and a luncheon with Sam Donaldson of ABC News -- is free and open to the public. However, reservations are required.
The event will take place at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The symposium will also be Webcast live at
www.connectlive.com/events/mediabias from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT.
The Grant Howell Legacy Symposium will aim to address such issues as what defines a journalist and how news images shape public perspective. During three panel discussions, experts and journalists from major print and electronic media organizations will examine issues challenging the identity of the modern news industry. Donaldson will speak during the lunch portion of the program.
Panelists include former New York Times managing editor Gerald Boyd, Karen Brown Dunlap of the Poynter Institute, syndicated columnist Armstrong Williams (who was recently caught up in a payola scandal and who some believe aided in disseminating covert government propaganda) and several others.
