Updated at 4:40 p.m. EST, May 24A May 22 Dow Jones/AP story about advertising spending reported that newspaper ad revenue grew 8.49% in the first quarter to $4.7 billion, compared with the same quarter last year, according to a survey by CMR, an advertising research company.
That figure does not cover all newspapers, nor those nationally circulated.
The figure was based on a survey of about 450 newspapers in 61 markets. CMR has a separate category for national newspapers, where ad revenues declined 9.29% to $710 million.
A broader survey of the newspaper industry by the Newspaper Association of America found that advertising expenditures on newspapers fell 6.2% in the first quarter to $9.7 billion.First-quarter advertising spending for all media was up 0.41%, advertising-data company CMR said Wednesday.
CMR said first-quarter ad spending came to $23.5 billion, up from $23.4 billion a year ago.
First-quarter advertising for network television rose 6.2%, to $5.6 billion from $5.2 billion last year. Cable-TV advertising declined 15.94% to $2.1 billion from $2.5 billion a year ago, CMR said.
Magazine advertising declined 10.64% to $3.3 billion, while newspaper ad revenue grew 8.49% in the quarter to $4.7 billion.
CMR, the U.S. unit of Taylor Nelson Sofres, a British marketing-research firm, said it expects to see a "modest" increase in advertising spending by the third quarter.
