By: Joe Nicholson Expenditures Hit $10.8 Billion
The eye-popping success of newspaper ad sales continued in the first
quarter of 2000, with expenditures hitting $10.8 billion, up 5.7% over
the same period a year earlier, the Newspaper Association of America
reported Thursday.
With a boost from year-end holiday sales, the industry appears poised to
reach the $50-billion mark in 2000.
National advertising accounted for $1.8 billion, a gain of 18.7%, its
biggest quarterly percentage jump in 17 years. Retail inched up 0.5% to
$4.6 billion.
The category many newspapers have worried about in the Web era,
classified, also did remarkably well. Classified rose 6.7% to $4.4
billion, including a recruitment category leap of 11.7%.
