By: E&P Staff Gannett Co. Inc., Tribune Co., and the Copley Press sold the company that owns the Boodle online coupon service to Coupons Inc., the big printable coupon company said Tuesday.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Coupons Inc. said it has acquired Consumer Networks Inc., the privately held venture of the three newspaper chains.

Coupons Inc. will now distribute printable coupons from consumer brands to more than 550 newspaper Web sites, which the company calls the "natural online audience" for the service.

No terms were disclosed.

Coupons Inc. has provided the trademarked Digital FSI infrastructure that has powered Boodle for the past four years.

"Newspapers deliver almost 90% of the 384 billion coupons distributed each year. As consumers shift their media consumption online, newspapers' sites are the natural place for them to turn for savings," Coupons Inc. CEO Steven Boal said in the announcement.

Coupons Inc. said the acquisition strengthens its local coupon offerings through Boodle's OPAL technology, which features printable coupons from local businesses in about 100 papers now.

It said it plans to work with newspaper sites to develop new targeted media programs.
