By: (AP) Newspaper publisher and editor Jerry Brady has decided to seek the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Dirk Kempthorne this fall.

Brady, whose great-grandfather served as governor in 1909 and 1910, is the publisher and editor of the Post Register in Idaho Falls and president of the Post Co., which owns the newspaper and KIFI-TV8.

He said Monday that he will make a formal announcement later this week.

Brady is the only Democrat to officially declare his intentions to seek the party's nomination for governor this year.

Kempthorne, who served as Boise mayor for more than six years before winning the 1992 race for the U.S. Senate, plans to formally announce his re-election campaign later this month.

He easily won the state's top office in 1998 with nearly 69% of the vote.
