Newspaper Sues Police For Denying Access to Ex-Officer's Records

By: A newspaper is suing the Madison, Wisconsin Police Department, accusing it of violating the state's open records law.

The Wisconsin State Journal says the police department has refused to release disciplinary records involving a former officer who resigned.

The newspaper is seeking access to employment and disciplinary records involving former officer Meredyth Thompson. Facing termination for unspecified misconduct, Thompson resigned from the force.

Police acknowledged the public's right to know about police misconduct and how it's handled, but said disclosing those records would not serve the public interest.

The lawsuit was filed in Dane County Circuit Court.
