By: E&P Staff 2004 proved to be a year full of advertising catalysts -- events like the Olympics and the presidential campaign drive a lot of ad dollars -- as total advertising expenditures for the first nine months of the year jumped 10.3% over the same period last year, to $102.4 billion, according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR.
Local newspapers reaped the most in absolute terms, at $17.7 billion (national came in at $2.4 billion), though growth in this sector was more tepid than in other media. Ad spending increased in local newspapers 6.6% compared to the same period last year, national newspapers 9.7%, network TV 14%, consumer magazines 10%, cable TV 16.1%, and the Internet 25.8%.
