THE GOOD OLD DAYS:  After hitting highs of more than $100 a share in 1997, GCI traded in a range of about $70 to $80 until the end of 2005.

Who believes: GCI’s top three institutional investors are JPMorgan Chase, which in the past year tripled its holdings to 24.3 million shares, a 10.2% stake; Ariel Investments LLC, with 13.2 million shares, or 5.52%; and The Vanguard Group, with 13 million shares, or 5.4%.

Who doesn’t: Short percentage of float as of May 14 was 12%, meaning about one-eighth of shares available for public trading were held by investors who borrow shares and sell them, betting the share price will drop so they can profit by returning shares bought at a cheaper price. Generally, a short percentage above 5% indicates bearish sentiment on a stock.
