Newspapers Rank Among Top News Web Sites

By: Eight of the top 20 news Web sites in the U.S. are affiliated with newspapers, according to the latest statistics from Nielsen/NetRatings.

For the month of April, the top news sites in terms of audience were CNN.com, MSNBC.com, and Yahoo! News. NYTimes.com was No. 4 while Gannett Newspapers' combined Web sites ranked at No. 6, followed by washingtonpost.com in seventh place.

The rankings of current events and news sites was based on a panel of 60,000-plus Americans accessing the Web at work and at home.

A number of newspaper-affiliated sites also showed up in the top 20 directories/local guides as ranked by Nielsen/NetRatings. In that list, the top three sites were CitySearch/Ticketmaster Online, Superpages.com, and Yahoo! Yellow Pages. Knight Ridder Digital's Real Cities network came in at No. 9; the E.W. Scripps chain at No. 13; boston.com, No. 15; NWsource.com, No. 16; Atlanta Journal-Constitution, No. 17; and nj.com, No. 18.
