Newspapers To Drop Monday Edition

Posted
By: (AP) The Journal Newspapers Inc. is eliminating its Monday editions in Virginia and Maryland to cut costs.

Beginning next week, the paper will publish five days a week - Tuesday through Friday, with a Sunday edition that arrives in the mail on Saturday.

Journal executive editor David Farmer cited the slowing economy as the reason for eliminating the Monday paper.

"Newspaper costs are driven by three basic factors: people, paper, and postage. In a pre-emptive move to solidify your newspaper, we have chosen to limit some paper and postage expense. That allows us to hold current staffing levels and improve coverage during the remaining five-day schedule," Farmer wrote in a front-page letter to readers Wednesday.

All the Journal's paid subscriptions are delivered through the mail, Farmer said.

The Journal Newspapers publishes separate editions in Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties and the city of Alexandria in Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland. The papers have a combined circulation of 145,000.
