Newsprint: From Web to web

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg North America's second-largest newsprint manufacturer now sells its paper for web presses on a business-to-business Web site in which it has invested an undisclosed sum.
Headquartered in Greenville, S.C., Bowater Inc. said it also reached agreement with Boston-based PaperExchange.com to integrate the companies' information systems so that online customers will have a seamless interface to Bowater's production and distribution systems.
Though initially concentrating on newsprint sales, Bowater eventually will be able to take advantage of e-commerce options that include selling other products and buying raw materials and equipment via the PaperExchange.com site.
An online global market for pulp and paper whose members buy and sell their wares in private transactions, PaperExchange.com recently appointed John Plouffe as general manager, newsprint.
With more than 17 years of experience in both domestic and international newsprint sales and operations, Plouffe joined the e-business from Prema, the print resource management division of Newspaper Services of America, where he served as sales vice president. He earlier was groundwood sales vice president at Abitibi-Consolidated.
