By: Francis S. "Kit" Webster III changed his route to work in Austin, Texas, over the weekend as he moved to his new positions as CEO and president of NewsStand Inc. from his old positions as president, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer of TippingPoint Technologies Inc. The companies announced Webster's arrival and departure, respectively, Dec. 14.
At NewsStand, Stuart Garner, a longtime newspaper company executive who has served as chairman since March and as its CEO for most of the same period, will continue as chairman.
NewsStand's technology allows publishers of newspapers, magazines, and other publications to distribute to readers via the Internet digital copies of their products in a format faithful to those products' appearance in print. The privately held company's suite of software is used for The New York Times Electronic Edition (NYTEE) that launched in October. Other newspapers that are partnering with NewsStand include
The Daily Deal in New York,
The Globe and Mail in Toronto, and the
International Herald Tribune in Neuilly Cedex, France.
At TippingPoint Technologies, Webster's responsibilities as president will be assumed by John F. McHale, chairman and CEO; his responsibilities as chief financial officer will be assumed by James E. Cahill, vice president and general counsel, on a temporary basis until a permanent replacement can be found; and his responsibilities as chief operating officer will be assumed by McHale and other members of the publicly traded company's executive management.
TippingPoint Technologies is the current incarnation of the company formerly known as Netpliance Inc., which in 1999 began marketing an Internet appliance named the i-opener. The company began exiting this business late last year, and it now is focused on providing a programmable computer-network platform.
