By: E&P Staff The St. Paul Pioneer Press has implemented the browser-based NewsWay workflow automation from ProImage, in Princeton, N.J.
Before recently installing Kodak CTP equipment, the paper decided it needed a single workflow automation solution that would integrate editorial and advertising prepress systems, proofing devices, RIPs, platesetters and punch-benders, and to send ink presets to the pressroom.
"Besides being able to manage our pages and plate output, ProImage was one of the few vendors that offered an interface to our Goss MPCS press-control system for ink presets," Production Director Kevin Garris said in a statement. "It has also provided us with a significant improvement in throughput speed."
In Saint Paul, NewsWay imports page plans from a Mactive advertising system and then creates edition plans for the various daily products - an entirely automated process except for any plate counts modified by plateroom staff.
An OpenPages editorial system releases Postscript pages while the Mactive system releases PDF pages to NewsWay. Received pages are load-balanced between two Harlequin RIPs, which can be monitored (with status messages displayed) through NewsWay.
Bitmap pages are analyzed for page type, and any that are of a slightly different size go through an additional device to correct page placement on the plate. Pages are then all imposed and text and furniture (graybars and two types of vision dots to handle old and new Nela benders) burned on to the final plate image. Special marks are placed outside the image area to enable the Nela system to sort odd and even plates into different bins.
Pages are routed to an approval queue to be viewed by plateroom staff for correct status before they are moved on in the workflow. Final pages are then routed to recently installed platesetters, where they are color locked so all sets of a separation are always sent to the same device, maximizing color quality.
NewsWay also routes TIFF pages to NewsColor for calibrated hard proofing.
