Newsweek launches editorial series to demystify hype around AI

Posted

Newsweek has announced an innovative editorial approach to demystify and boil down what's real, and what's not, around the topic of AI.

The magazine has enlisted Gabriel Snyder, editorial director, Newsweek Nexus, to work with Marcus Weldon, a former CTO of Nokia and President Emeritus of Bell Labs, to seek out, and sit down with, the greatest thinkers on the subject, for far-reaching and reality-checking discussions.

A first session, now available in written and video formats, is with Rodney Brooks, the former director of MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and founder of iRobot, maker of the Roomba.

“For a while now, we've been grappling with the challenge of covering the ever-growing mountain of information about AI,” said Dayan Candappa, chief content officer, Newsweek. “The problem, to date, is the fact that coverage has been falling into one of two categories. Either it's mostly superficial and often sensational, or it's so deep in content that it's largely impenetrable to us mere mortals.

“To rectify the situation and, we hope, provide some much-needed insights into how to navigate the technology, we have married our editorial expertise with the extraordinary technological expertise of the greatest thinkers in the field,” noted Candappa.

The first piece and video in the series, titled “The Myth Buster: Rodney Brooks Breaks Down the Hype Around AI,” can be found at https://www.newsweek.com/rodney-brooks-ai-impact-interview-futures-2034669.
