NewsWorks Sees Mixed Results In Year One

One year into NewsWorks, an ambitious experiment in digital local news and civic engagement, Philadelphia public media organization WHYY is finding that audience and revenue growth may be a long haul proposition, though a recently inked deal with NBC’s local owned and operated WCAU could raise its profile.

Launched in November 2010, NewsWorks brings together hyperlocal, civic and cultural reporting into a website that also aggressively invites user interaction, though WHYY has tweaked the form of that interaction — an incentive-based forum known as the Sixth Square — after it failed to boost engagement.
