By: E&P Staff The San Francisco Panorama, a publication of literary journal McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, will feature 16 pages of full-color comics when it hits newsstands next week.
The full-color comics will feature nearly 20 artists, including Dan Clowes, Art Spiegelman, Adrian Tomine, Chris Ware, Alison Bechdel and Jessica Abel. Many of the cartoonists will be from the Bay Area.
The last page of the comics section includes comics, jokes and puzzles aimed at kids and is called ?Rear End.?
?The comics section of any Sunday newspaper has always been valuable entertainment,? said Oscar Villalon, McSweeney?s publisher, in a statement. ?But because of space constraints, comics have gotten smaller. This is our throwback, our reminder of how cool comics can be if you offer it in glorious color and give the artist a big canvas.?
The 300-page Panorama publication, compiled by author Dave Eggers, will also include the work of writers such as Michael Chabon, Junot Diaz, William T. Vollmann and Stephen King. It will also have news, arts, sports and book review sections, in addition to investigative reports, pull-out posters and a magazine.
"The Panorama in part is a way to demonstrate the many things that newspapers can do uniquely well, and how necessary they are to a thriving democracy," Eggers said in a statement. "From the beginning, we conceived of this as a way to show readers how much newsprint can do, and how essential to the craft of journalism readers' support of print is."
The limited issue publication will be released by the San Francisco Chronicle on Dec. 8. It costs $16 and can be ordered online through the Chronicle?s SFGate.com Web site,
